Maple Leafs left wing Ryan Hollweg received an automatic two-game suspension Monday after collecting his third boarding or checking from behind major in a 41-game span. The third penalty came in last Wednesday's 7-3 preseason loss at St. Louis, when Hollweg was assessed a boarding major and game misconduct.

The Maple Leafs could end up disappointing a lot of their critics—and some of their own fans—by not finishing last overall this season.

While most have pegged 2008-09 as the season the Leafs finally pay the price for pre-lockout spending sprees, no-trade contracts to fat cat players and lack of emphasis on draft and development, they might not be as bad as their own forecast.

Even as general manager Cliff Fletcher predicted "rocky days ahead" and said he only had one top-six forward (Nik Antropov), it's conceded the Toronto defense is as good or better than last season, the Leafs' goaltending is top notch and new coach Ron Wilson has a pretty good track record at confidence-building.

Columbus rookie Nikita Filatov had a regulation goal and then netted the shootout winner for the Blue Jackets, who rallied from a two-goal deficit and beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-4 on Sunday night in the preseason finale for both teams. Alexandre Picard, Jakub Voracek and Jason Chimera also had goals for the Blue Jackets (4-4).

Dan Cleary scored his second goal of the game early in the third period to help the Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-3 in exhibition play Saturday night. Jan Mursak and Nicklas Kronwall also scored for Detroit (5-1-2), a 5-3 winner over the Maple Leafs (2-5-1) on Friday night in Detroit.

Johan Franzen's second goal of the game with 1:57 to play broke a tie and lifted the Detroit Red Wings to a 5-3 preseason victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Friday night. Franzen also had an assist, while Henrik Zetterberg had a goal and an assist and Nicklas Lidstrom and Valtteri Filppula scored goals for Detroit (4-1-2).

Maple Leafs first-round draft pick Luke Schenn scored the shootout winner on Monday night to give Toronto a 4-3 preseason victory over the St. Louis Blues. Fans at the Air Canada Centre chanted, "Luuuke" when the defenseman was selected as a shooter. The 19-year-old then skated in and beat Manny Legace with a backhand deke move.

Ales Kotalik scored 1:03 into overtime to cap a three-goal rally in helping the Buffalo Sabres to a 3-2 preseason victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night. Derek Roy and Paul Gaustad scored power-play goals in the final 2:21 of regulation to force overtime, and Maxim Afinogenov had three assists in Buffalo's preseason home-opener.
