The highlight of the night came long before the opening faceoff. With the NHL trade deadline drawing closer and a tilt between Toronto and Carolina, the two worst teams in the Eastern Conference at hand, it was the last-minute scratch of Alexei Ponikarovsky from the Maple Leafs lineup that caused the biggest stir.

Alexei Ponikarovsky, the Maple Leaf most widely expected to be moved before Wednesday’s NHL trade deadline, was a late scratch for the team’s lineup Tuesday.
