Bryan McCabe traded for Mike Van Ryn
Toronto sends McCabe and a 2010 4th round pick to Florida and receives Van Ryn in return.
The worst kept secret in the NHL has finally run its course. Bryan McCabe has been traded to the Florida Pathers and in return, the Toronto Maple Leafs are receiving 29 year old defenceman, Mike Van Ryn.
In Mike Van Ryn, the Leafs are receiving a more reliable defenceman than they had with McCabe, who had become prone to mental lapses in the defensive zone while under pressure. His point production is less than McCabes’, but he is more physical and is sound defensively. Van Ryn, it’s been noted, has suffered from wrist injuries for a good portion of his career and while he maintains that these injuries are 100% healed and that he is feeling much better - only time will tell.

His scouting report:
While many Toronto fans are celebrating McCabe’s departure, he was, for a spell, one of the better defenceman in the league. He scored big goals (sometimes in the wrong net), made big hits and was a great leader of the Toronto Maple Leafs. We all wish Bryan well and expect that he will flurish in Florida, with perhaps less scrutiny and pressure from the fans and the media.
